He began his art studies at the Boston Art Normal School 〔Opitz, Glenn B., ''Mantle Fielding's Dictionary of American Painters, Sculptors & Engravers'', Apollo Books, Poughkeepsie, NY, 1988〕 where he studied with Cyrus Dallin . He later worked in the studio of Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson and Henry Hudson Kitson.〔McGlauflin, Alice Coe, editor, ‘’Who’s Who in American Art’’, The American Federation of Arts, Inc., Washington D.C., 1937〕 During World War I Saville joined the French Ambulance Corps for a year and then transferred to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the remainder of the war.
